Murals
Process
Design I create a mural design with my client’s feedback and specifications. I take the surface measurements and draw or paint a design on paper that will work well in the space. I love painting nature themed murals and am open to any requests for my original designs.
Prep I make sure the surface is clean, smooth and ready to be painted on. Care is taken to protect the surrounding areas from paint drips or spills. I then use chalk to sketch out elements of the design onto the surface and will use a projector to trace from my design for more complex designs.
Paint Using low-VOC, quality house paints and lightfast acrylics, I start painting the design onto the surface! Usually this takes several days to a week since it’s generally on a large surface and drying time is needed between some layers of paint.
Finish I make sure all chalk residue is wiped away from the surface and check all details of the design. My indoor murals in lower traffic areas do not need any additional finishing. For indoor murals in high traffic areas I apply a clear protective topcoat. If the mural is outdoors, I apply a varnish to protect from weathering by the elements (or graffiti).
Pricing
My murals are priced by square footage of the painted surface depending on the complexity of the design. To get a free estimate for a mural you have in mind or to schedule a mural consultation with me, go to the commissions link above and fill out the contact form or click on the button below. Please include the dimensions of the area you want painted and your design ideas to receive an accurate estimate. This estimate will give you an idea of the price range for your mural before you decide to work with me. The final mural quote will be calculated after a consultation with me (via phone or video call) and includes all paint and materials I use.
When you decide to work with me, you will be given a few price options based on our initial consultation conversation. Once you decide on the mural size and complexity that works best for your budget, you will receive a contract, pay a 50% deposit and I will work with you to create a mural design that you love. The design process includes 2 initial designs to start per wall, one round of revisions, and the application of the final design.
I will start designing your mural upon receipt of a 50% deposit of the total mural quote. There are many payment options including card, cash, check, and electronic transfer. Payment plans are considered upon request.
I look forward to working with you to create your custom mural!
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of paint do you use? I use lightfast acrylics and interior low-VOC house paints for indoor murals. I use lightfast mural acrylics and exterior house paint for outdoor murals. I also will prime the surface and apply a final clear coat of varnish for weather resistance on outdoor surfaces.
Is your paint safe for children’s rooms? All the paint I use indoors is classified as low-VOC (less than 50g/l VOCs) so is safe for children and animals. I offer the option of zero-VOC paint as well and can discuss that option with you when planning your mural.
Do you paint murals for local businesses as well? Yes! I would love to design a mural for your business.
What are my options for mural designs? Your options are endless! I will work with you to create an original design you love. Whether it be your child’s bedroom or nursery, a focal wall in your house, a home office, or a piece of furniture, I will paint you a mural you will love!
How long does it take you to paint a mural? It depends on the size of the mural and complexity, but the whole prepping and painting process usually ranges between 1 day and 7 days for indoor murals.
Can you paint surfaces other than walls? Of course! As long as the surface is intact, clean, and rigid, I can usually paint it. Examples include: bookshelves, sheds, headboards, tables, doors, fences and more (just ask!).
What COVID-19 precautions are you taking? I will be wearing a mask while in your home and will only be coming to paint when I am feeling healthy. I also ask that you reschedule your mural appointment if you are feeling unwell or have been exposed to COVID in the 2 weeks prior to your appointment.
Do I need to prepare the wall I want painted? If the wall is in good condition and has a coat of paint on it already, then you’re good to go! If the wall needs repairs, is extremely dirty or needs to be primed then this will incur an additional cost (you can fix these issues yourself first to save some money!)
How well do the murals hold up to wear and tear? After a recommended 30 days to allow the paints to cure (fully harden) you can easily wash the mural if the wall gets dirty! In high traffic areas, or upon request, I apply a clear topcoat to my indoor murals that is low-VOC, water-resistant and abrasion resistant.
What if the mural gets damaged, can you do touch-up work? I can definitely come back to do touch up work, though this will be a separate fee.
