Nursery Murals: Making Creative Spaces for Children

You may know that I absolutely love painting murals for children. I really enjoy working with parents and children to design a beautiful work of wall art that makes the child’s bedroom, nursery or playroom a creative and special room in their house. These murals are not just a way to decorate a room, but they will be a creative focal point that makes the space welcoming, fun and personal for children.

As an artist with a background in biology and childcare, I enjoy incorporating nature into my designs and love making these spaces tailored to the individual children and families. I love to include elements of each child’s favorite things and working with expecting parents to design a nursery that they envision for their new child. I believe that being exposed to art and nature can inspire children and connect them with the natural world. Murals are a great way to make that connection in children’s spaces.

Creating art is very important for child development (see this article!) and having a creative space of their own can help children be inspired and stimulate their creativity. Having a large painted mural on the wall is just so much more exciting and fun than framed art. Children have big imaginations and making space for them to dream and create is helpful for their overall development.

If you have a designated playroom for your kids, a fun and colorful mural would be amazing in that space! Bedroom and nursery murals make your child’s room creative and special (and can be the focal point of a theme for your nursery design). There’s plenty of DIY options out there for creative parents who want to get artsy, or you can commission a local artist to design and paint a mural for your home.

With or without in-home murals as inspiration, get creative and inspire your kids with making their own art! There are so many great art activity ideas for children online and in books. Getting messy with finger paints, painting with found objects from nature (sticks, leaves, rocks, feathers!), exploring collage or drawing with crayons or pastels are all fun ways to foster creativity and art with children. They’ll love it and be learning and developing skills at the same time. If you have your own kids or work with children, share your favorite art activity to do together in the comments!
